Hello,
I'm starting to develop an app using motif, and I downloaded two free books on motif:
- Motif 2.1 Programmer's Guide
- Volume 6a Motif Programming Manual
The latter seems to be more friendly (this is my first Unix project), but describes Motif 1.2. I'd like to know wether it is still worth the effort reading this book, or it's too outdated (considering I'll be using openmotif 2.x).
I'll also apreciate any comments on these books, and pointers to further reading material.
Thanks.

Motif books
You really should get the O'Reilly books Motif Programming Manual 6A and Motif Reference Manual 6B. I was able to purchase nice used copies on half.com for under $5 each! Extremely worthwhile.
I would also advise you to get the other X Windows books in the O'Reilly Series (Xlib Programming Vol. 1, Xlib Reference Vol. 2, X Toolkit Programming Vol. 4, and X Toolkit Reference Vol 5.) In addition, the X Window System User's Guide, Vol. 3, is useful for understanding app-defaults files, etc. When you program with Motif, you still need to make Xlib and Xt calls so the Motif books really aren't enough. The O'Reilly series is excellent and easy to read.
I found every one of these books on half.com.

Books on Motif
Thanks a lot for that reply. As I mentioned in my first post, I already have an electronic copy of volume 6a and 6b.
Anyway, I noticed these books describe Motif 1.2, and I'll be using Motif 2.1. Are those books appropriate nowadays? Or should I read the Motif 2.1 Programmer's Guide offered on the OpenMotif website ?
Thanls a lot

motif books
I would not bother with reading the 1.2 motif books if 2.1 books are available since there are updates and things that have become obsolete. If you are planning on using it as a reference, I'd be sure to get 2.1 motif documents. I have a hardcopy of the O'Reilly Volume 6B that's for Motif 2.1 so I know there is later material than what you found online.
Hope this helps,
Julie
