Scope as in lexical scope? We remain alive after our programs stop running.
Or do you refer to the range of skills that Motif programmers possess?

I think you have mistaken me. scope means demand. Is there a lot of opportunity for motif programmers. what are the job prospects? As far as development of GUI is concerned I think it is easy to develop using VC++ (this may not work on unix).
I find that there are all sorts of companies that need good Motif people, we just do not hear about them because the work they do is not the sort of thing that appears on the shelves of CompUSA, oir graces the pages of fad following magazines.
Generally, it would be hard to convince the people developing a new satellite, mission control, submarine missile launch, medical monitoring, etc type system to go with VC++, or Gtk, or Fltk.
Motif has been proven to be up to doing the work that goes on when people`s lives depend on it.
(I have this theory that most of the coolest ideas being explored in the world of software development are being done in Unix/Linux.)
If you want an API that will be cross-UNIX-platform, Motif is the way to go.
I am also becoming increasing convinced that for "real" projects, the GUI to use is Motif.
Finally, using BX Pro from ICS is probably the best way to get a GUI up and running fast with Motif. There are competitors, but few come close. And you can get FREE demo licenses, and the personal license is pretty cheap too!

I agree. monster.com doesn`t turn up too much for Motif.
However, Motif is still a very capable toolkit, despite its current lack of buzz. I suspect that there are lots of jobs in maintenance. In fact, see http//www.motifzone.com/jobboard/openings.html for an outdated list of the sorts of things that are available.
And I think knowing Motif is valuable because of the knowledge of X that it implies, knowledge which is useful for other X-based toolkits.
