I am wanting to display a second mouse pointer, and was wondering if there was anyone out there who could outline the basics of how display it.

First, you need something like XFree86-4.0x XServer.
Technically it should work, but you might get some fuzzy behavior from MWM as it try to managed input events or even when it Grabs X for feedback. I`ll give a try on one of my XF4 box and let you know.
