LibXpm.so4.11

Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 07/22/2002 - 16:59. General Questions
I am running IRIX 6.5 on an SGI O2 box. I recently upgraded a software package and it installed successfully. When I try to execute it, however, it gives me an error saying it can`t find the file "libXpm.so4.11". I tried to look online for this file but have not been successful. I believe it is part of the motif_eoe subsystem but am not sure how to fix this problem. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi,

Well, after all, finding a peice of software that doesn`t work isn`t eventfull these days...

Your X system works with Xpm files. Thats not a question. And you libXpm likely came with X as

"/usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4.11"

And I would be suprised none if the version number that is on your system differes (you were kidding about the capital L right?).

Is it a package that supplies Motif itself? Or is it a package which supplies a motif-based application? Is it a package that supplies linux tools for irix?

Try to post a little more info in groups like that.

I don`t have an Irix. That`s a nice machine. Remember its always best to back up before tooling with libs no matter how good the advice is. I hope you asked SGI about this. They should have a quick accurate answer.

You should not just find the lib and install it yourself unless it is part of an update package applicable to your Irix computer.

Also, its possible this program uses only the newest libXpm and that you won`t be able to install it, at least not readily.

libXpm, the X pixmap library, is a set of routines used to store and retrieve X pixmaps (a data structure comprising a rectangular array of pixels) from files; the xpm file format is an extension of the monochrome bitmap file format in the X11 specification. (Traditionally, libXpm was maintained and distributed separately from the X Window System, but XFree86 has absorbed this library).
"

Anyway - the "libs" game can have pitfalls and can consume time. Certainly not worth doing if you don`t really need the application in question.

I would try to find an SGI user`s forum because users of other unix`s have no way to give a definite answer to this specific kind of question (without analyzing your system).

Hi again,

I`m *assuming* you don`t have a development kit and your aren`t an Irix developer of course.

I`m also assuming that Irix`s X is modified and that you might NOT be able to use the standard libXpm safely.

(I`ll also assume you *might* need a very expensive dev kit to compile - because your *are* using the X that Irix supplied.)
